April Goals

Well the time has come to spend some time and think about what goals I should set for the upcoming month. I know March isn't over yet, but in the past I've waited until after my previous month review is done and posted before setting the current month's goals, so this time I thought I'd do something different - plan ahead! Also, in the past my goals have been vague, so this time I'm going to take a stand and set some specific goals.

Move up a Level
Currently my BR on Stars is $97.54, which means, by my BR management rules, I can only play tournaments that the total buy-in is less than $4 (25x BI). This also means, that the $4+0.40 games are out until my BR reaches $110. I'm close, but not there yet. This month, not only would I like to be able to play the $4+0.40 tournaments, I would like to find myself at a comfortable BR to be playing the $5+0.50 buy-in tournaments. Therefore, by my calculations, I would need a BR of $137.50 just to start thinking about this level and bringing it closer to $150 would make me feel more at ease. Bottom line, for this month, my goal is to increase my Stars BR to over $150 (~+54%). Challenging, you betcha!

Play more hands
Now aside from moving up a level and increasing my BR on Stars, I will set a challenge to play more cash game hands this month. Since I will only be playing on RedKings (for cash games that is), here is my current number of hands for that site:
McTap03 (RedKings): 326

The goal now will be to reach 2000 hands, and hopefully more. In order to do this, I will more than likely multi-table (up to 4 max, but mostly 2, as I'm still getting accustomed to multi-tabling). This doesn't mean I should just sit at the table(s) and spew my BR in order to reach my hands goal. I will still do my best to play each hand properly as this is also a learning experiment to me. Overall, I feel that I only need to play 2 tables 1 hour each over 15 days (half the month), as with full ring games I see about 60 hands/hr, so doing the math I would reach 1800 hands (2 tables * 60 hands/hr * 15 days) which puts me higher than my goal. With seeing many more hands I should be able to become a better hand reader and possible find some leaks in my cash game.

Personally I feel that these 2 goals are attainable, so stick around and watch me as I make them happen.

Good luck at the tables.

Another hand for analysis

After I was done my cash sessions last night I hopped onto a SNG on Stars. Nothing exciting happened there (I went out in 6th) but I kept thinking about a hand that I had during my cash session that I forgot to include in my last post.

Here it is, and any comments on how it was played would be greatly appreciated. Before I get comments/questions on why I only BI half, it is because my BR can not justify a full BR over 2 tables, so I half BI over 2 tables. Bottom line, my choice.

Texas Hold'em $0.10-$0.20 NL (real money), hand #P4-92585910-1049
Table Male, 30 Mar 2009 12:48 AM

Seat 1: BB ($9.80 in chips)
Seat 2: UTG ($12.77 in chips)
Seat 3: Villain 1 ($1.90 in chips)
Seat 4: UTG+2 ($10 in chips)
Seat 5: MP ($5.94 in chips)
Seat 6: MP+1 ($2.53 in chips)
Seat 7: CO ($2.40 in chips)
Seat 8: Villain 2 (BTN) ($7.76 in chips)
Seat 9: Hero (SB) [ 8H,8D ] ($4.90 in chips)
ANTES/BLINDS
Hero posts blind ($0.05), BB posts blind ($0.10).

PRE-FLOP
UTG folds, Villain 1 bets $0.35, UTG+2 folds, MP folds, MP+1 folds, CO folds, Villain 2 calls $0.35, Hero folds, BB folds.

With a mid PP I was looking to see the flop cheap. When Villain 1 raises 3.5xBB from UTG+1 I immediately put him on a big pair. He seemed to be playing Short Stack Strategy (BI short and pushing big hands hard). So this made me think my 88 was no good. Once the BTN calls I begin to wonder if I'm getting good enough odds to call OOP. When set mining you need roughly 7.5:1 odds to call as this is how often you will hit and the pot was offering 2.83:1, not enough but implied odds would be greater if I hit against the *supposed* big pair of Villain 1. Being kinda new to cash games, I decide to let it go (typical tournament play, not so sure if this was right for a cash game)

FLOP [board cards 2S,8S,10C ]

$#%^@ I would have flopped 2nd set, and if I put Villain 1 as playing SSS, his only PFR raise hands from UTG+1 would be AA, KK, and QQ, so this flop does not help him. The action that follows makes me realize that I could have doubled through Villain 2 and cleaned Villain 1 out.

Villain 1 bets $0.20, Villain 2 bets $1.45, Villain 1 bets $1.35, and is all-in, Villain 2 calls $0.10.

TURN [board cards 2S,8S,10C,JS ]

RIVER [board cards 2S,8S,10C,JS,6S ]
SHOWDOWN
Villain 1 shows [ 2H,2D ] -> I did not put him on such a small pr from that early position.
Villain 2 shows [ 10H,8C ] -> really not sure why he would be calling a PFR, except to try to use his position to steal the pot.
Villain 1 wins $3.76.

SUMMARY
Dealer: Villain 2
Pot: $3.95, (including rake: $0.19)
BB loses $0.10
UTG loses $0
Villain 1 bets $1.90, collects $3.76, net $1.86
UTG+2 loses $0
MP loses $0
MP+1 loses $0
CO loses $0
Villain 2 (BTN) loses $1.90
Hero loses $0.05

Overall, I lost $0.05, when I could have won approximately $6.80 (less rake).

My question to all of you is which hands are good to chase with and from what position. I figured, using the limited information I had, that I was not in a good position to chase, so I folded.

Before you comment, think of this. I just ran the #'s through a formula that calculates the odds of getting certain cards on the flop, and the odds of getting this exact flop knowing both Villain's and my own cards is 0.0066% *EDIT* I redid the calculations and the odds changed to 0.079% which is greater but still unreasonable to think this flop would come up very often (1/1265) *EDIT*. So that pretty much not the greatest odds to be chasing.

Good luck at the tables

A little cash action

Played some cash sessions this evening and managed to finish up $7.12. 2 of the sessions were cut short when the tables became to short (1 became HU) as I prefer full ring tables.

Here are a couple of HH that I found interesting.

Texas Hold'em $0.10-$0.20 NL (real money), hand #P4-92594710-823
Table Petaluma, 30 Mar 2009 12:53 AM

Seat 1: nagev1 ($3.07 in chips)
Seat 4: McTap03 [ JS,QC ] ($4.59 in chips)
Seat 8: D_P_G ($5.15 in chips)
Seat 9: xbrattonx ($10.71 in chips)
ANTES/BLINDS
D_P_G posts blind ($0.10).

PRE-FLOP
xbrattonx calls $0.10, nagev1 folds, McTap03 calls $0.10, D_P_G checks.

I decide to call with position.

FLOP [board cards 5C,8C,9S ]
D_P_G checks, xbrattonx checks, McTap03 checks.

flop brings nothing and everybody checks. I probably should have bet, but I was worried someone was slow playing trips or 2pr.

TURN [board cards 5C,8C,9S,5D ]
D_P_G bets $0.10, xbrattonx calls $0.10, McTap03 calls $0.10.

SB decides to min bet. This looks like he has a set and is trying to build a pot, but with implied odds if I catch a T, I decide to call.

RIVER [board cards 5C,8C,9S,5D,JD ]

The J gives me top pr, ok kicker, but with the action by the SB and a call by the BB I figure 1 of them has a 5 so I fold.

D_P_G bets $0.40, xbrattonx calls $0.40, McTap03 folds.

SHOWDOWN
D_P_G shows [ 6C,QH ]
xbrattonx shows [ 6S,8S ]
xbrattonx wins $1.33.

SB was bluffing and I had the BB beat. Should I have called the river bet?

SUMMARY
Dealer: McTap03
Pot: $1.40, (including rake: $0.07)
nagev1 loses $0
McTap03 loses $0.20
D_P_G loses $0.60
xbrattonx bets $0.60, collects $1.33, net $0.73

I left this table shortly after I took out xbrattonx when he pushed his AQo into my TT and they held.

This hand just played itself.

Texas Hold'em $0.10-$0.20 NL (real money), hand #P4-92619903-538
Table Sta.Barbara, 30 Mar 2009 1:10 AM

Seat 2: Acentino ($8.98 in chips)
Seat 3: dsms ($8.13 in chips)
Seat 7: McTap03 [ 6D,6C ] ($6.03 in chips)
ANTES/BLINDS
dsms posts blind ($0.05), McTap03 posts blind ($0.10).

PRE-FLOP
nanoingo bets $0.20, Acentino calls $0.20, dsms folds, McTap03 calls $0.10.

I decide just to call and set mine.

FLOP [board cards 8C,6S,6H ]

BINGO. Quads, now to extract value for this hand.

McTap03 checks, nanoingo bets $0.40, Acentino calls $0.40, McTap03 calls $0.40.

Wow, couldn't have asked for better, 1 bet and a call before it gets back to me. Again, this hand is the nuts so no use pushing people out.

TURN [board cards 8C,6S,6H,7S ]
McTap03 checks, nanoingo bets $1, Acentino calls $1, McTap03 calls $1.

Again, a bet and a call before it gets back to me. These 2 are building a nice pot for me.

RIVER [board cards 8C,6S,6H,7S,QD ]
McTap03 bets $2.40, nanoingo calls $2.40, Acentino calls $2.40.

I decide to lead out figuring that if I check and neither bet, then I'd be pissed for missing the value bet. Surprisingly they both called.

SHOWDOWN
McTap03 shows [ 6D,6C ]
nanoingo mucks cards
Acentino mucks cards
McTap03 wins $11.45.

SUMMARY
Dealer: Acentino
Pot: $12.05, (including rake: $0.60)
nanoingo loses $4
Acentino loses $4
dsms loses $0.05
McTap03 bets $4, collects $11.45, net $7.45

Not much more I can say about it. Just wondering if I bet more on the flop if they still call.

My last session was not that exciting and after almost 1 hour I was down almost half a BI mostly because of the blinds and a few PFR that got pushed back on the flop. I did managed to generate another 1.9 points and show a profit. So all is good.

Good luck at the tables.

AA where are you?

So I was looking through my stats on PT3 tonight and something interesting popped up. I've played 656 hands on Poker Stars since depositing back in February during their 25 Billionth Hand weekend and I still haven't seen AA. No big deal as I'm still up a few bucks since I started. I just find it interesting that with the probability of AA coming up being 1 in every 221 hands, if these numbers were exact/precise I would have seen them almost 3 times by now. What does this mean, well, the cards are random, and eventually I *should* hit a stretch of hands where I get AA a few more times than expected. Lets hope I can win (and win big) with them when I do!

Good luck at the tables.

Freerolling Along

Had a long session last night, between 3 different sites. I first started on RK by playing 2 cash games (0.05-0.10) with a $5 BI. By the end of the 1st hour, I was down $8.58 and only managed to increase my points by 1.1 (at this rate I will never get there). No real hands to mention as I kept getting my hands slapped for trying to steal from the cookie jar. After that, the freerolls started.

The first of the FR's was on FTP. For those of you that follow UFC, you may have seen the Full Tilt Logo all over the octagon and on the fighters. It turns out that FTP has a promotion going on for Canadian UFC fans to go to UFC 97 in Montreal. Here's the details if you are interested (Fight Train). For those of you who would like to play in this but don't have a FTP account, make sure you get one with a rake back deal. **Affiliation Plug** PokerStrategy offers a 27% rake back deal on FTP and higher other sites **Affiliation plug**. Even if you don't plan on initially playing for money, it is better to sign up now with a rake back deal, then to regret it later on (trust me I keep kicking myself). Now back to the FR.

Right from the start, this was going to be a donkfest. With over 1000 players registered and only the top 18 making it to the qualifier, it was going to take many all-ins before the end would be reached. Typical FR. With this in mind, I set on my way to manage the minefield in hopes of making the final 18. Fairly early on I managed to double up when I limp called a multiway pot with 87s and a flop of 886. From there I tried to mostly play small ball poker by not raising my hands to much and folding to pre and post flop aggression. If I hit the flop hard, I pushed, otherwise I wasn't planning on chasing. I managed to make it past the first break with slightly larger than average stack, but at this point, there were several stacks larger than mine at my table who were controlling all the action, so I tightened up. Several times I would push my strong hands (AK-J, big PP) only to find several callers and then insta-shoves on co-ordinated flops (2 of the same suites, higher cards, connected cards) which then required me to fold. In the end, I went out in 112th (out of 1036) when my BB hand flopped trips only to see the UTG limper go runner runner for the flush (because my kicker was weak, I didn't overplay the hand and it cost me. turned out he also flopped trips with a bigger kicker but ended up winning with the flush).

Part way through the FTP freeroll, I hoped onto the Rounders Radio Suited Connectors Pumped on Poker $150 Freeroll on Doyle's Room. For me, this tournament had a different feel to it as many players were sitting out. So naturally, I started raising PF more than I normally would and found myself near the top fairly early on. It wasn't until after the first break until I finally had players at my table that could take me out (with regards to their chip stacks, not their play). From there I started to play standard ABC poker and managed to be far enough away when the bubble burst (70th out of 494 registerd). At this point it became a waiting for the right hand game, in hopes of doubling/tripling up so I could make the FT where the decent (according to the prize pool) money was to be found (70th received $0.40 while 10th got $1.50 and 1st was getting a little over $30). Then the following hand came up.

So now I'm sitting inside the top 10 in chips, but unfortunately when we got down to 4 tables, 4 out of the top 5 CL were also sitting at my table, making it hard to push people around.Several hands later, the following hand comes up.

Out in 36th for a win of $0.68 (SHIP IT!). This now increases my Doyle's Room BR to $2.93 (up 30%), which BTW has all been acquired through their FRs (I have never deposited here).

Upon initial review of my hand, I felt I played this properly by making the right call on the flop only to see my opponent suck out. But after posting this hand (and comments) on the JackSeven forum, I have now realized that I should have folded pre-flop and waited for a better situation to get all my chips in, as 1 of the commentors said "Typically UTG raises are ahead of 88 and are never folding even if you are racing." Point now well taken.

Overall, played 4 hours, was up way too late for my early morning commute and ended the night down $8. Oh well, chalk it up as experience.

Good luck at the table.

Some tournament action

I managed to play in 2 on Stars tonight. 1 was an 18 person, while the other was a 9 person.

In the first one (18 person), I was playing fairly tight early on, when the following hand came up.

Now, for those who know me, they know I try to play ethical poker, and in this case, I was planning on checking it down to the river and then value betting. Nicely though, Villain 2 thought he would get smart and try to take down the pot with his small pocket pair. Thank you very much.

From that point on, I pretty much played straight up as both players who followed me had VP$IP in the 40's and had no problems pushing hard on the flop/turn or river. So I waited for hands to play against them. Not many came up, a few did, but they both would fold before the showdown, so really nothing to talk about.

Finally the bubble burst with this hand.

PokerStars Game #26329150885: Tournament #150544579, $3.00+$0.40 Hold'em No Limit - Level V (75/150) - 2009/03/24 21:56:45 ET

Seat 1: UTG (3050 in chips)
Seat 3: Villain (1685 in chips)
Seat 7: Hero (4540 in chips)
Seat 9: BB (4225 in chips)

*** HOLE CARDS ***
Dealt to Hero [9c Ad]
UTG: folds
Villain: calls 150
Hero: calls 75
BB: checks
*** FLOP *** [9s Td 9d]

At this point, I figure I'm good so I check.

Hero: checks
BB: checks
Villain: bets 1535 and is all-in

Putting Villain on either a draw or a steal I decide to isolate.

Hero: raises 1535 to 3070
BB: folds
Uncalled bet (1535) returned to Hero
*** TURN *** [9s Td 9d] [Ah]
*** RIVER *** [9s Td 9d Ah] [Js]
*** SHOW DOWN ***
Hero: shows [9c Ad] (a full house, Nines full of Aces)
Villain: shows [Jh Qd] (two pair, Jacks and Nines)
Hero collected 3520 from pot
*** SUMMARY ***
Total pot 3520 | Rake 0
Board [9s Td 9d Ah Js]
Seat 1: UTG folded before Flop (didn't bet)

Seat 7: Hero (small blind) showed [9c Ad] and won (3520) with a full house, Nines full of Aces
Seat 9: BB (big blind) folded on the Flop

With that, we are down to 3. From there it took 34 hands before we made it to heads up and only another 5 and we were done. And here is the final hand.

PokerStars Game #26329694807: Tournament #150544579, $3.00+$0.40 Hold'em No Limit - Level VII (100/200) - 2009/03/24 22:14:51 ET

Seat 9: Villain (6675 in chips)
Hero: posts the ante 25
Villain: posts the ante 25
Villain: posts small blind 100
Hero: posts big blind 200
*** HOLE CARDS ***
Dealt to Hero [Tc Ac]

At this point, Villain's #'s were 43/4/2 so with a suited Ace I decide to push.

Villain: calls 100
Hero: raises 600 to 800
Villain: raises 5850 to 6650 and is all-in

His all-in move didn't really surprise me as he had done it several times throughout the game and with such a high VP$IP, I put him more on a steal. The reason for this is that most of his all-in were post flop and the only PFR he had were in the range of 3-4 x BB. So I call and show that I'm ahead.

Hero: calls 5850
*** FLOP *** [Ad 9c 9h]
*** TURN *** [Ad 9c 9h] [Js]
*** RIVER *** [Ad 9c 9h Js] [6d]
*** SHOW DOWN ***
Hero: shows [Tc Ac] (two pair, Aces and Nines)
Villain: shows [8d 6h] (two pair, Nines and Sixes)
Hero collected 13350 from pot
*** SUMMARY ***
Total pot 13350 | Rake 0
Board [Ad 9c 9h Js 6d]
Seat 7: Hero (big blind) showed [Tc Ac] and won (13350) with two pair, Aces and Nines
Seat 9: Villain (button) (small blind) showed [8d 6h] and lost with two pair, Nines and Sixes

Flopping the Ace really eased my mind and finishing first is always a nice little bonus.

I finished up $6.70 for the night and added 4 more points to my challenge.

Good luck at the tables.

Cash Game

I played my first cash game on Red Kings tonight, overall I finished up $1.63 over 45mins on 2 tables.

During these 2 sessions, some interesting hands came up. Some I made the right read, but wrong call, while others I made the right read and right call. Here are 2 of my hands from different tables, let me know what you think.

Hand 1
Texas Hold'em $0.10-$0.20 NL (real money), hand #P4-91816822-152
Table Castries, 20 Mar 2009 12:50 AM

Seat 1: Hero (BB) [ AD,QS ] ($8.37 in chips)
Seat 2: UTG ($3.85 in chips)
Seat 3: UTG+1 ($2.02 in chips)
Seat 4: UTG+2 ($15.84 in chips)
Seat 5: MP ($14.43 in chips)
Seat 6: MP+1 ($2 in chips)
Seat 7: MP+2 ($9.90 in chips)
Seat 8: CO ($2.10 in chips)
Seat 9: BTN ($21.78 in chips)
Seat 10: Villain (SB) ($11.35 in chips)
ANTES/BLINDS
Villain posts blind ($0.05), Hero posts blind ($0.10).

PRE-FLOP
UTG folds, UTG+1 folds, UTG+2 folds, MP folds, MP+1 folds, MP+2 folds, Co folds, BTN folds, Villain bets $0.35, Hero bets $1, Villain calls $0.70.

At this point, I'm putting Villain on a steal as I had been playing pretty tight, and he had been fairly loose. I think I'm ahead here.

FLOP [board cards 8S,KC,9C ]
Villain checks, Hero checks.

Still think I'm ahead, so I check.

TURN [board cards 8S,KC,9C,AH ]
Villain bets $1.55, Hero bets $3.10, Villain bets $8.70, and is all-in,Hero calls $4.17, and is all-in.

At this point, I figure he hit the A with a weak kicker, so I re-raise. Once he pushes all-in I immediately think a set, but for lack of experience (yeah I'm a donkey), I call off my stack.

RIVER [board cards 8S,KC,9C,AH,6S ]
SHOWDOWN
Villain shows [ 9D,9S ]
Hero shows [ AD,QS ]
Villain wins $18.89.

SUMMARY
Pot: $19.72, (including rake: $0.83)
Hero loses $8.37
Villain bets $11.35, collects $18.89, net $7.54

Had the right read, just not good enough yet to let this hand go.

Hand 2
Texas Hold'em $0.10-$0.20 NL (real money), hand #P4-91818330-124
Table Bridgetown, 20 Mar 2009 12:58 AM

Seat 1: UTG+2 ($1.85 in chips)
Seat 2: MP ($3.10 in chips)
Seat 3: MP+1 ($2 in chips)
Seat 4: MP+2 ($10.86 in chips)
Seat 5: Hero [ AS,10H ] ($8.01 in chips)
Seat 6: BTN ($3.58 in chips)
Seat 7: SB ($2.05 in chips)
Seat 8: Villain (BB) ($3.59 in chips)
Seat 9: UTG ($6.82 in chips)
Seat 10: UTG+1 ($2.67 in chips)
ANTES/BLINDS
SB posts blind ($0.05), Villain posts blind ($0.10).

I had been fairly tight on this table, so decided since it was folded to me, that I would take a stab at stealing this pot.

PRE-FLOP
UTG folds, UTG+1 folds, UTG+2 folds, MP folds, MP+1 folds, MP+2 folds, Hero bets $0.35, BTN calls $0.35, SB folds, Villain calls $0.25.

I get 2 callers and hit the flop. With a flush draw on board I decide to bet 3/4 of the pot to not give great odds to chase. Villain decides to insta-push and I'm automatically assume a flush draw, so I call.

FLOP [board cards 4H,9H,AC ]
Villain checks, Hero bets $0.80, BTN folds, Villain bets $3.24, and is all-in, Hero calls $2.44.

TURN [board cards 4H,9H,AC,4D ]

RIVER [board cards 4H,9H,AC,4D,7S ]
SHOWDOWN
Villain shows [ 7H,KH ]
Hero shows [ AS,10H ]
Hero wins $7.21.

Turns out I made the right call and my hand held up.

SUMMARY
Pot: $7.58, (including rake: $0.37)
Hero bets $3.59, collects $7.21, net $3.62
BTN loses $0.35
SB loses $0.05
Villain loses $3.59

Overall, I would have to say that even though I finished up for the night, it could have been better as making the right read but wrong call on the AQo hand hurt my profits for the night. Hopefully next time I can make the right read and right call.

As for my Points challenge, I managed to accumulate 2.8 points tonight. Slowly getting there.

Good luck at the tables.

A New Challenge

With all this discussion I've been having (offline) about where I should play (see my last posts for more details), I've finally come up with a solution that I am happy with. I've decided to leave my Mansion account alone for a while and focus on reaching 2 different point challenges.

The first is on Poker Stars where I need to collect 500 VIP points before August 16, 2009 in order to clear my 25% deposit bonus. From what I can tell, Stars gives 5 VIP points for every $1 in tournament fees. They also offer a similar amount of points for rake collected in cash games, but since my cash game is weak (at best) I will stick to tournaments on Stars. At this rate I will need to play/pay $120 worth of tournament fees in order to clear my $25 bonus, and it is an all or nothing challenge, so not reaching my goal means I get $0 in bonus (some sites do offer increments, but not Stars). Worth it, not really, but experience is key to becoming a better player and I'm up for a good challenge.

The second is on Red Kings where I need to collect 1000 points in order to cash out. Back in July of '08 I signed up for an instant bankroll of $50 on Red Kings and began playing there off an on. Unfortunately I didn't devote enough time there and my bonus period expired before I could make any bonus money. Now the only thing I can do is either let that money sit there collecting virtual dust or try to reach the points needed to cash out. Since this account was created with free money (I didn't deposit any of my own money), and the fact that I'm a lousy cash game player (I play 95% tournaments with an ROI of 5%, so that side isn't bad), I figured I'd play cash games here and if I lose, no big deal. The problem with cash games are Red Kings is that you only get 0.1 points for every $0.10 rake you pay, which means I will need to generate $1000 in rake in order to reach my goal (actually less as I have around 80 points already there). They do offer 5 points for every $1 in tournament fees, but I'm trying to use RK as my cash game learning ground, so I will try not to play tournaments there. I may play the odd one, but the thing with RK is that PT3 only accepts cash game hand histories and not their tournament hand histories (unless that has changed, but I haven't heard anything more about it), so trying to use PT3 to help me would be in my best interest. Another interesting point about Red Kings is that the lowest cash game they offer is the $0.05-$0.10 games with a max BI of $10 (100 BB). This means that if I max BI, 13% of my BR will be in play. This will make it tough to multi-table at first, as I don't want to over commit too much money in a game that I'm not that good at. What I plan to do is buy-in for $5 on 2 tables and try to play a slightly modified Short Stack Strategy (SSS), where I will follow the SSS rules for at least 3 orbits and then start to open my hands in position to mix it up. Overall, I see this challenge as two-fold. First I'm lacking in cash game experience, so this will be a good chance to improve my game and second the money is irrelevant so losing it won't upset me. And like my Stars challenge, I'm always up for a good one.

Both these challenges should take me some time, so check back often to see how I'm doing.

Game Challenge on!

Good luck at the tables.

Moving down, but where?

I've finally reached the point where I can cash out my money on Mansion. My BR there is currently sitting just under $400, which means I can comfortably play the $10+1 level games (tourneys, not cash) and not get too frazzled if I lose several BI's in a row. The problem now is that I need to withdraw $250 of this BR to pay for PT3 and the money I deposited on Poker Stars back in February. This will then leave my BR at almost $150, which is way below the 25x BI's needed to play the $10+1 level. My dilemma is that now that I must drop down to the $5+0.50 level, should it be on Mansion or another site.

For those who have read this blog know that I haven't had the best relationship with Mansion. They mislead me to believe that when I deposited on their site, while I was in the middle of my Player Point Challenge (PPC), I would be able to get my deposit bonus. Through several e-mails, it was discovered that I had to wait until my PPC was over before I could collect points towards my deposit bonus. This only left me with 3 weeks to try an amass 13000 points in order to clear my bonus (at 20pts/$1 tournament fee it would take a while). I was not happy with this as had I known that before I deposited (I clearly asked) I would have waited before depositing. I then suggested that they extend my bonus period by a few weeks (not the 2 months expected) to make up for their error, and my misunderstanding, but they felt that my generated rake was not worth their hassle, so they said NO. So that is the up side of leaving Mansion. The downside is that I've played nearly 15,000 hands at Mansion and am starting to have some good numbers and notes on many of the players I play against. Leaving will pretty much mean that that info was a waste of time, unless I deposit my money on another iPoker site, then some of the numbers may follow but the notes won't. Also, since I have accumulated several thousand Player Points, those too would be wasted. It is not that I have enough to do anything with, it is just that they would sit in my account and collect virtual dust.

Now if I do leave, where should I go? Currently I have accounts on Poker Stars and Red Kings, so those 2 sites are out, and I also play on FTP through a shared account, so that may be an option, but I would rather play with the shared account until it is empty or we cash out. I ultimately would like to play somewhere where I will have a rake back deal as this would be a nice monthly bonus. Over the past 6 months that I played at Mansion, I generated a little over $300 in rake, which would have given me almost $100 back (through a 30% rake back deal) and would have made my BR look better. I could deposit my money on another iPoker site, but they don't offer rack back deals, so I would essentially be getting nothing but a deposit bonus. Then there is the option of a totally different site/network. The problem with a new site is that I'm pretty much going in blind, as I won't have any data on any of the players, which then adds to the profitability curve on that site (harder to make money against unknown players).

So, anyway I look at it I have to move down a level, all I need to figure now is where. Thoughts/ideas?

Good luck at the tables.

March Goals

Although the month is already 20% over, I still feel I need to set some goals for this month.

First off, my main goal is going to be to reach the points needed to cash out of Mansion and pay for PT3 and my transfer to Poker Stars. As of today, I only need to pay another $13 in tournament fees, or 13 $10+1 DorN. So far this month I'm 5/6 in the DorN with the help of PT3. That software really makes a difference when you are playing tight ABC as I can usually get an idea of who's going to call my PFR by their VP$IP. So far, no complaining about spending the money on PT3.

Second, we (pokerBRB and I) are almost done our side project on should have it fully operational by the end of the month. So I need to devote some time to get that working properly. Another part of our joint project is that we have a shared BR on FTP that we both try to spend a few hours a week trying to build up, so that is another goal I plan on working on this month.

Third, since I have PT3 installed and over 30,000 hands in my database, I'm going to spend some time analyzing my hands to see where my 'leaks' are so that I may work on those in order to become a better player.

And last but not least, spend more time with my Tournament Killer Poker by the Numbers book so that I can find other ways to improve my game.

That should be all.

Good luck at the tables.

February Goals Review

First off, I apologize for being late on my review from last months goals. I've been sick for the past week and haven't spent much time on my computer. Now that I'm feeling better, here's what happened last month. If you didn't get a chance to read about my February goals, check them out at your convenience.

Overall, February was a slow month. As for playing time, it was my lowest amount of time spent since July '08. Although I didn't play much, I did make it a productive month with a $67 profit and an ROI of 39%. I also thought I reached my cash out goal of 5000 MCP, only to discover that I'm still 500 MCP short. Because I thought I had reached my cash out goal, I decided to transfer $100 onto Poker Stars so that I may play in their 25 Billionth Hand challenge. I didn't win the 'Big One' or any of the other 150 smaller prizes. For the record the closest I came was 64 hands off 1 of the Millionth Winning hands. The extra $125 would have been a nice bonus.

I also decided to purchase PokerTracker3 and the first game I played with it was a success. You can read out it here. I would have to say that purchasing PT3 was the reason my ROI for February was high.

Another high point of last month was that I finally made the money in an MTT. It wasn't a huge cash (I'm still down money from all my MTT's played), but it was a cash non the less, and hopefully I can build on it in future MTT's

As for reading more, I reach this goal, as I only managed to put in a few hours into my TKPBTN book. So far it is very interesting, looking forward to exploring it more in the coming days. I know I should have read while I was sick, but all I really wanted to do was sleep.

Overall, I'm happy with the increase in my BR and my overall play for February and planning on continuing this trend into March.

Good luck at the tables.
