Live Action

My buddy JGiles and I, along with a few other friends went over to the Mohawk Bingo Palace for a little poker action tonight. The game they were playing was a $25+3 MTT, with re-buys and 1 add-on at the break. Starting with 5000 chips I managed to work my way up to 6300 early on. At this point I find myself in the SB (200-400 blinds) and the play goes limp, fold, limp, fold, fold, raise to 1200, fold and then I look down at AKo. With 2600 in the pot and me OOP, I decide to re-pop it hoping to take down the pot right there. I raise it to 3600 and only the raiser calls. Flop comes 875 rainbow and I insta show my last 2700, only to be called by KK. The turn and river don't help me and I decide to re-buy 4000 more chips ($20). From this point I don't really get much but manage to stick around to break where I do the $10 add-on for another 5000 chips, putting me somewhere around 17k. At this point we were down to 40 (after starting with 50) and the blinds where 1000-2000, so I was looking for a hand to shove it. That hand never really came, but I did manage to stay alive working my stack up to 30k. The odd steal here and there (with mediocre hands, but good position) and I manage to make the final table, but definitely bottom 3 in chips. Still no big hands, but luckily some of the players at the FT were aggressive and next thing you know I'm in the money sitting with the bottom stack when the bubble popped at 6 players. Finally, in the SB I look down at 65o, but with blinds 6000-12000 and only holding 21000 I decide to put them all in in a 3-way pot. Although I was live (against A2o and the CL's  Q8o) I didn't do much and went out in 6th for a cash of $234 (net $176). Add in the tip for the dealer and a little cut for my buddy (a deal we've had in place since we started going and I think we are even as to what we've paid each other) and I show a nice little profit for the night. Not bad considering the only big hands I picked up all night was AKo and TT.

Session Review

Another session last night and over 69 hands playing NL10 on RedKings, nothing too exciting happened. I did win a decent pot against a SS when my AA held up against his KK. I know what he feels like (see previous post for more details). Other than that my hands could not generate any actions, probably has to do with my tight image. I did lose a few smaller pots, one holding AJo from LP against an aggressive BB's PFR . With a flop of J-K-5 rainbow I figured my 2nd pr, top kicker might have been good and I paid my opponent down to the river, where the 3rd shot at the pot (all-in) made me doubt myself. He/she didn't flip so I don't know if I had him or not. He/she was playing many hands throughout the night and rarely showed, so other than being really loose and somewhat aggressive I couldn't narrow their range over the short session. In another hand shortly after, I called a 4xBB PFR from the SB with JJ. When the board came A-7-K, I checked and folded to a pot size bet by my opponent.

Overall, I finished up $1.79 for the night and had the following numbers:

VP$IP: 11
PFR: 6
AgF: 2

I have to say, playing tight ABC poker is kinda boring as you wait for good cards. But until my BR can grow a little more, I'm going to stick to it and try to limit my loses, while working on getting reads of my opponents.

On a side note, I won $2.12 (over half a BI_ playing NL4 over on Doyle's Room. On that site, since my BR is so small and I'm playing with money I won in a freeroll, I play a much looser, more aggressive style (but I don't have any stats to back it). Don't get me wrong, my play is not considered donkey-ish here. I'm just using this site to work on my position game and really don't mind chasing a little to see what could happen. It does make up for the tight play onRedKings and 2 tables makes is a little busier to keep me going.

Overall, I like how I have things set up and for the most part, I'm making both my BR grow (slowly).

See you on the felt.

Session Review

Very short session, only 17 hands, and I ended up losing my whole BI. Holding KK UTG I bet 3.5xBB only to get 3-bet by the BB. I then 4-bet and the BB 5-bets all-in. At this point I put him on either AA, KK, and QQ (this is the micro limits so people do 5-bet with QQ and sometimes lower) and decide to find out exactly what my opponent would risk his stack with. You guessed it (as did I), AA. Oh well, now I know I need to sometime let go of KK.

Session Review

Had a longer than usually session yesterday where I really didn't pick up any monster hands. I did pick up a fair amount of middle to low pocket pairs, which in the end, didn't help me either.

Over 105 hands, playing NL10 on RedKings, I only won 4 of them, with 2 of them holding 99. The problem is that the amounts won in those hands never exceeded 10BB. On the flip side, I lost 23 hands, the majority being from the SB and BB, so no big financial lose there. I did however, lose my 2 biggest pots when holding 88. Both times I was against short stacked players, so I had a feeling I was probably behind, but I couldn't be stacked, so I decided to gamble. The biggest lost came against AA, while the other was againstAKs where my opponent flopped the nut flush and I turned a flush. Not great decisions on my part, but I'm still learning.

Overall, here's how my stats finished off:
VP$IP: 11
PFR: 3
AgF: 2
BR: $-2.79

Since I'm playing tight ABC poker, I don't expect my PFR and AgF to be too high unless I can go on a with catching good cards.

On a side note, I also played 50 hands on Doyle's Room playing NL4, and ended up that session up $1.69. Between the two, my loses are minimal, but the hands played and experience gained will help me over the long run.

See you on the felt.

Session recap

Played a little on the weekend and didn't have time to post a recap of what happened.

Over the course of a little more than 1 hour, I managed to finish up over 2/5ths of a buy-in playing NL10 on RedKings. I was also playing on Doyle's room and finished up over 1/2 of a BI playing NL4 during that same time.

When I went back to review my hands, I decided to take a different approach. This time I listed all my hands from the RK session (Doyle's room is part of the Cake network which don't allow software like PT3 to breakdown the hands, so no data is available) to see where I won and lost the most money. Over 65 hands I only had 3 winning hands, while having about 15 losing hands. The losing hands where all hands where I either was in the blinds or limped in, except for one. That means, apart from the one other hand which I will get to shortly, my loses didn't amount to much (at most it was $0.75).  Now for that bigger than that blinds losing hand, it played out like this.

From EP I raise it up to $0.35 with AKo and get 2 callers. Being OOP I'm not liking it too much. The flop brings 359 rainbow and the SB leads out for almost all the pot and I quickly fold. Figuring I was drawing very thin (maybe 2 overs and a weak straight draw, but no flush draw) and having only invested 3.5xBB, it wasn't worth chasing. So this hand brought my losing total to around $1. Combine that with my winning hands, and I finished up.

My biggest hand was against 2 opponents and played out like this.

Form the CO I pick up QQ and raise it to $0.45 (there was already 2 limpers). The BTN calls and the SS in the BB re-shoves for $1.25 more. The limpers fold and I call knowing I can't lose anymore to the SS. The BTN also comes along. The flop brings TT9 (2 suites) and I lead out (essentially putting the BTN all-in). Now, the more I think about this, the more I'm realizing that this bet might be a leak in my game. With a coordinated flop, I'm probably behind the BTN's pre-flop calling range of hands and leading into him/her is not good. I should have probably just checked to control the pot, but I was looking to push the BTN out and take on the SS with my over pair. The BTN calls all-in and turns over AQo. The SS then turns over KK for the lead in the main pot, but I'm ahead in the side pot (which is now bigger than the main pot). The turn and river bring the other 2 K's and the SS wins the main pot with quads, while I empty the BTN's stack into mine, bringing me up (even though I lost some money to the SS).

Overall, both tables were good and I'm happy with my play thus far playing NL cash games.
